The Discovery Recovery tour was organized by Prof. Fred Watson in order to raise money after the devastation of the January 2013 bush fires that ravaged the Warrumbungle Mountains where the Siding Spring Observatory is situated near Coonabarabran. Lyn Ahern and I were pleased we took advantage of the tour. I was a great opportunity to see Australia’s contribution to astronomical research.

The trip included tours of the Sydney Observatory, Mt Stromlo, Tidbinbilla and Parkes Radio Telescope finishing off with the events at Coonabarabran  and Siding Spring as part of StarFest – Science in the Pub, the Bok Lecture featuring Prof. Brian Schmidt and Siding Spring Open Day.   Prof. Fred Watson gave the group exclusive guided tours through the AAT and UK Schmidt telescope as well as information about the many other scopes on the mountain.

At the end of the tour, the group was joined by astronomers working at Siding Spring on the lawn at the UK Schmidt Observatory for our Mad Hatters Tea Party.
